I can imagine this pen and ink drawing in a Victorian gentleman's study.  It has a dark, dreamy feel of a mysterious creature yet to be discovered. The drawing is 26cm x 14cm and comes mounted in a black frame- image available .

This original drawing was part of the Ama Myth of The Mermaid exhibition, part of Jacqueline Read-Szymczyk's  'First Prize' exhibition at Rugby Museum and Art Gallery awarded in 2012.

Jacqueline researched the myth of the mermaid and became interested too, in the Japanese  women called, the Ama.  They dive for pearls and seaweed.Their history covers thousands of years.  They always  swam naked: reports of viewings by mariners, may have contributed to the deep beliefs of the true existence of mermaids.
